FIELD OFFICE: WHERE CRAFT MEETS FUNCTION IN A MODERN WORKPLACE
Returning from the vibrant energy of NeoCon in Chicago, we continue our focus on next-generation workspaces with a standout project that redefines utility through design precision.
Field Office, designed by KEM STUDIO, transforms a 24,000 ft² warehouse into a branch office for a national specialty contractor. More than a renovation, this project honors the foundational principles of craftsmanship and hard work—what the architects describe as the duality of “true craft” and “work boots
A Design Grounded in Honesty and Light
Central to the renovation are two monumental, 20-foot-tall skylights that bathe the interior in natural light—illuminating not just the space, but the values embedded in it. Around this core, the layout includes a shared kitchen, lounge, and a conferencing hub for ongoing workforce training and education
Intentional Spaces for Productivity
Team offices are strategically arranged to maximize daylight, privacy, and flow. Acoustic ceiling treatments enhance the open office zones, while expressive wall finishes define areas for focused collaboration. Every design gesture respects the balance between utility and refinement
A second entrance speaks directly to the needs of field crews—featuring dedicated areas for muddy boots, additional showers, restrooms, and meeting spaces, reinforcing the seamless relationship between fieldwork and office life
A Workplace of Integrity
Through restrained material choices and skillful detailing, Field Office becomes more than a place to work—it is a physical statement of values: craftsmanship, practicality, and quiet sophistication
