Mountainside Residence in Bromont by MUUK Architecture: Modernism Rooted in Nature
A modernist retreat in Bromont by MUUK Architecture, the Mountainside Residence blends stone, steel, and wood with sustainable strategies to create a timeless connection to nature.
Nestled into the sloping terrain of Bromont, the Mountainside Residence by MUUK Architecture embodies the spirit of The Wave of Sustainable Design a quiet dialogue between architecture, landscape, and lasting materiality.
The house anchors itself on a garden-level foundation, following the natural slope of the mountain to integrate seamlessly with its forest surroundings. Its simple gable-roofed silhouette, clad in textured stone, matte black steel, and warm wood, creates a restrained yet striking presence.
Inside, daylight floods through vertical glazed openings and skylights, illuminating the cathedral-like main space where the living room, dining room, and kitchen merge into a single linear volume. A stone fireplace serves as the heart of the home, extending the interior onto a covered terrace for year-round enjoyment of the outdoors.
Sustainability is embedded in the design: an exposed concrete slab doubles as thermal mass and radiant heating, while the choice of durable, aging-gracefully materials ensures ecological sensitivity and longevity.
The interior, designed by Les Stéphanies, reflects the same ethos: a minimalist yet warm palette, built-in furniture, and subtle lighting that create a calm and grounded atmosphere.
