Coley’s Point House: A contemporary reflection of Newfoundland’s coastal traditions
Coley’s Point House: Contemporary Coastal Home in Newfoundland by Woodford Architecture
Nestled within the serene coastal landscape of Coley’s Point in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland, this contemplative residence embraces its dramatic maritime setting with restrained elegance. Composed of intersecting gable and mono-pitched volumes, the form echoes the quiet vernacular of Newfoundland’s built tradition while articulating a modern silhouette.
A dialogue of textures defines the exterior: vertical dark-grey cladding juxtaposed with crisp horizontal white siding, sculpting a nuanced interplay of light and shadow. Carefully placed windows frame extended views of the harbor, drawing the sea into daily life, while sheltered courtyards mediate between interior comfort and coastal exposure.
Inside, the design emphasizes simplicity, light, and connection. Expansive glazing fills the interiors with natural illumination, while warm finishes foster intimacy against the wide horizon outside. Spaces are arranged to balance private retreat and communal gathering, with movement and views carefully considered at every turn.
The result is a dwelling that reconciles openness and shelter, tradition and modernity, landscape and home. More than a residence, Coley’s Point House stands as a reflection of its setting-calm, timeless, and deeply rooted in the rugged rhythms of Newfoundland’s coast.
